Seniors Team - Enjoyable day at Rothbury

golf match iconMinto Seniors ventured across the border on Monday 25th September to play the rturn match against Rothbury  The home match back in April resulted in a 3-3 draw, but Rothbury on their home turf this time managed to run out 4-2 winners.  Minto got off to a good start with wins in the first and third rubbers but Rothbury finished strongly to take rubbers 4, 5 and 6.

Iain Oliver reports that the weather started rather damp but after 3 holes the waterproofs were off and although rather dull it was warm and no more rain materialised, course was in good condition considering the weather that had been the week preceding. An excellent meal was provided as always and our game was played in the true spirit of friendly competition even although we were well beat.

With only one match of the season to go, Minto's Senior Team performance to date in 2017  is Played 13 Won 5, Lost 4, Tied 4 Rubbers for 42 Rubbers against 36

The final match is the AWAY match v Goswick on Tuesday 7th November.  Please sign up now if you haven't already done so.  We ad a convincing home win against Goswick but Goswick will be much stronger on their own course, especially if the wind blows as it has been known to do on the coast.

Please also note that the 4 Club Texas Scramble will now be played at Kelso on 4th October.

The full results of the Rothbury match are shown below.

Minto v Peebles

Jim Adam reports that Minto went down to a very narrow defeat against Peebles yesterday, Tuesday 19th September.   Minto lost 2.5 to 3.5 Most of  the matches were close. Minto lost matches 1 3 and 4. Highlight of the earlier matches was a great win for a John Law and Ron Elliot over a strong  Peebles pairing. Tam Glendinning  and Dave Howden won match 5 6 & , the most convincing win of the day.

The last match went to the 18th but Pim McDonnell and Ray Johnson were held to a half. The match was played in great weather with the course beginning to dry out.  Peebles were very complementary about both the course and the catering.

Minto's Senior Team performance to date in 2017  is Played 12 Won 5, Lost 3, Tied 4 Rubbers for 40, Rubbers against 32

The final two scheduled matches are the  the AWAY match v Rothbury on Monday 25th September- 9.30 for 10.00 and the AWAY match at Goswick on Tuesday 7th November.  Please sign up now if you haven't already done so.  We played a draw at home to Rothbury earlier this year and had a convincing home win against Goswick.  Both the forthcoming matches could be tough as Godwick will be formidable on their home course, but both matches will form good days out.

Please also note that the 4 Club Texas Scramble provisionally re-arranged for Thursday 21st September has been re-arranged again as 21st September is the date of the Minto Seniors 4 Ball Better Ball Open.  There is still time to enter that Open, there's no clash with anything so there's no excuse not to play!  Enter through the Enter Opens button on any page of th website.  The Texas Scramble will now be played at Kelso on 4th October.

Minto v The Hirsel

Minto Seniors are thriving on home soil at the moment as they recorded a third successive win, this time against a team from The Hirsel.  Minto play The Hirsel just the once each year and this year it was Minto's turn to host.  The weather elsewhere in the Borders this morning was fairly changeable today so it's likely that the odd spot of rain fell on the coursed uring the match, but it certainly didn't dampen the performances where some clear victories were recorded.  However, there were also some very tight matches with rubbers five and six both ending as halves.

The Hirsel got off to a strong start with a good win in the first rubber.  Minto hit back taking rubbers 2,3 and 4 so it was all down o the last two rubbers to determine the overall result.  The half in match 5 was enough to tip the scales in Minto's favour and the final halved match meant the final result was 4 - 2 to Minto.

However, these inter club matches are not just about the result, they are designed as friendly events that encourage cameraderie between the Clubs. We look forward to next year's match at The Hirsel

Minto v Kelso

Minto Seniors seem to be getting into their rhythm now as an excellent performance today (Thursday 31st August) yielded a fine 5.5 to 0.5 home win over local rivals Kelso.  The recent match way at kelso had resulted in a 3-3 draw so Minto felt reasonably confident going into the home match.  However, complacency had to be eliminated as Minto concentrated hard for their win.  As ever, the match was played in a good spirit with lots of praise from each team for their opponent's shots.

Minto got off to a great start as the first three matches to finish yielded three points for the Home team.  The next match in was the half which saw Minto across the line before the final two rubbers reported in.

The course has recovered well from the rains of early August and everyone was pleased with the Course conditions. As well as expressing thanks to the green staff, everyone enjoyed the meal and service in the Lounge Bar as well.

The full results are shown below

Minto's Senior Team performance to date in 2017  is Played 10 Won 4, Lost 2, Tied 4 Rubbers for 33.5, Rubbers against 26.5

The next two scheduled matches are the HOME match v The Hirsel on Wednesday 6th September - 9:30 for 10:00, followed by the HOME match v Peebles on Tuesday 19th September - 9.30 for 10.00.  Please sign up now if you haven't already done so. We only play The Hirsel once a year but they always field a strong team. We played a draw away to Peebles earlier this year.  Both the forthcoming matches could be tough, but they will be enjoyable.

Minto v Duns

Minto Seniors stopped the Duns juggernaut in its tracks yesterday with a 4-2 victory on Home ground.  It was unlucky thirteen for Duns as their team captain David Gordon said they had been on a twelve match unbeaten run.  Ray Johnston got his Minto pairing off to a stunning start by recording 3, 4 and 2 on the first three holes.  Ray even got a shots on holes 1 and 3, but he obviously didn't need them  With Ray's national handicap and a par three third that would have been 11 Stableford points for the first three holes.  Ray and partner Pim McDonnell won their rubber by 3&2 so Ray's start was crucial.

The weather gods continued to shine overhead and hopefully they are drying out the course.  The third was still played as a par 3 though.

All the rubbers went to the 16th green or beyond so the match was tight at all times.

The next scheduled match is the re-arranged  HOME match v Kelso on 31st August - 9:30 for 10:00.  Please sign up now if you haven't already done so.  We drew at Kelso earlier this month; let's see if we can go one better with our local knowledge of Minto.

Minto v The Woll

For the second week running (17th August) , Minto's Senior Gents' Team played a match in excellent summer weather.  Given all the heavy rain recently, The Woll course was in excellent condition for a very tightly fought contest. When all the pairs were in The Woll just prevailed with a 3.5 to 2.5 win.  A couple of rubbers were won fairly convincingly, one by each team, while the other four went to the 16th  17th or 18th hole before being resolved.

Golf is a game of ifs, buts, maybes, bad luck, good luck and excellent shots.  All of these were in evidence to for both Clubs.

Lunch after the round was excellent and Minto players are very grateful to their hosts for providing such an enjoyable day.

Both teams showed their depths in numbers as Minto only fielded 6 of the players who faced The Woll at Minto earlier this year and The Woll only had 5 of their team from Minto.  Thanks to Ron Elliot for filling all the gaps in the Minto team that kep appearing earlier this week,

Minto v Kelso

Summer returned for Minto's annual visit to Kelso today (Thursday 10th August).  The sun shone, it was warm and Minto held their own away from Home.  The match was very tight as the scores went 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 2.5-2,5 and finally 3-3 as the various 4-balls came in.  The Kelso Course was in good condition and everybody enjoyed the day out.

The outcome of both the halved matches depended on putts on the final green.  Some dropped, some didn't.  Ron Elliot was said to be a demon putter today, something he said he wasn't at the Captains & Secretaries event at Peebles earlier this week.

The reciprocal match at Minto, previously postponed, has now been re-arranged for Thursday 31st August, 9:30 for 10.  All Seniors who can play should contact Jim Adams or sign up on the sheet in the Changing Room.  Remember, there are often important notices about dates and events and results on that Board or the display cabinet to the side - read them!

Kelso served us all a very good lunch.

Minto v West Linton

Minto Gents Seniors put in a good performance today (Monday 24th July) to register a win over a strong West Linton team in the annual match between the two Clubs.  Conditions for golf were excellent with a just a few spots where the heavy rain of the weekend was still apparent.  As he scores came in Minto built up a 3-1 lead but West Linton pulled it back to 3-2.before the final match produced another win for Minto to make the final score 4-2

The Wets Linton team were very complimentary about the Course which reflects well on the work Daniel and JP have put in since the cattle wandered over the 3rd, 4th and 5th.  Many West Linton players weren't aware that the course had suffered any damage.

Many of the matches were closer than some of the scores suggest and it was a very enjoyable day.  We look forward to the reverse fixture at West Linton next year.

Thanks to all the Minto staff for an excellent lunch.

Minto v Kelso Thursday 6th July

Match cancelled as Kelso were unable to raise a team

Minto v The Woll Thursday 22nd June

It was ideal conditions for golf yesterday (Thursday 22nd June) when Minto Seniors played their first match against The Woll.  Certainly it was the first match against The Woll since I joined Minto in 2010.  It may even have been the first match ever.  We were very pleased to welcome Woll players to our course.  We have played with Woll members in recent Border Club Texas Scrambles but this was a head to head match.

The competition was tight; only one of the six ties finished before the 17th green.

In the end the result was an honourable draw at three ties each.

As ever, the match concluded with convivial  drinks and a meal in the Lounge Bar with great support from Clubhouse staff.

Minto v Peebles Tuesday 30th May

The weather was truly awful at Duns today (Thursday 8th June) as twelve players from Minto and twelve players from Duns trudged their way round the Course in the pouring rain.  One consolation was that the rain fell vertically rather than horizontally.   It was, of course, the same for both teams buit Duns managed to cope with conditions much better than Minto.  Although Minto were up in at least two matches for a time, the end result was a clear win for Duns 6-0.

One match was played over sixteen holes omitting holes 13 and 14 which are and out and back pair at one of the extremes of the course.  Minto had to retire from one rubber as John Lunn unfortunately injured his shoulder when he fell over chasing a runaway trolley.  John and Pat Jubb were on a bit of a roll at the time clawing back the Duns lead.  John played on for one more hole but it would have been foolish to carry on.  Let's hope the shoulder recovers with a little rest.  Albert Thompson told me that he and Les Whiteman lost but he was a bit reticent about the score.

In the end though, we just acknowledge that Duns were the better team on the day.  We look forward to the return at Minto in August.

Minto v Peebles Tuesday 30th May

It was a very enjoyable match at Peebles today (Tuesday 30th May) when Minto Seniors travelled to take on a strong Peebles team on their home turf.  Peebles got off to to a great start taking the first two rubbers. The next two Minto pairs steadied the ship and got the score back to 2-2 before the Peebles fifth pair restored their lead.  Minto's final pair rose to the challenge though and levelled the match at 3-3

Peebles is a lovely course with stunning views over the surrounding countryside.  The weather was benign until the last few holes when the rain came down and the wind speed went up.   Some groupings chose to come in rather than play the bye but a couple of matches had to soldier on to complete their matches.  These were two of the three rubbers that Minto won so the perseverance was worth it.

Peebles new catering franchisee is a chef who is currently appearing on the Great British Menu so we were one of the first groups to sample the food, which was excellent.

Minto v Goswick Tuesday 2nd May

Minto were too strong for Goswick in the match between the two Clubs played at Minto today.  Minto Seniors played on their Home advantage today with a good win over our friends from Goswick.  Seniors matches are all played in a very friendly atmosphere with good shots from each team being applauded by their opponents.  However it is nice to win and Minto played to all their strengths to end up winners by 5.5 to 0.5.

The Course was in excellent condition and it drew praise from our visitors.  Steve Taylor, the Goswick Captain said his team always enjoy playing Minto because it is as different a course from Goswick at it is possible to get.

Quirky fact of the day:  Michael McFarlane drove his ball into a tree at the the 5th and the ball lodged in the branches.  Trying to get the ball out with a driver and a putter left the clubs wedged in tree as well.  Fortunately, one of the Goswick team, Michael Wright just  happened to have an extendable fishing rod in his bag, as one does.   This was used to retrieve ball and clubs.  You don't see that every day on the golf course.

Thanks to Eric English for stepping into the breach at short notice today when we looked as if we might be one short.  One member of the Goswick team might have had mixed loyalties today as Patrick Brooks representing Goswick is also a Minto member.

Minto v Rothbury

Minto got their busy program of 2017 matches off to a steady start with a tied outcome against Rothbury at Minto.  The sun shone during the round sparing the players of the downpour that followed during the convivial meal in the Clubhouse after the event.  The results was close throughout the afternoon as the score in each match came in.. First Rothbury lead only for Minto to haul them back.  There then followed two halved matches.  Minto took the lead after the result of the fifth tie but Rothbury levelled it all up again in the final rubber.

Our Rothbury colleagues were very complimentary about the condition of the course and the catering after the golf.

Full results of today's event are given below. The next match is versus Goswick at Minto on Tuesday 2nd May.  Please show your availability on the sheet in the Gents Changing Room
