Mixed Winter League - Ladies to the fore

FrostyGolfIt was Ladies Day at Minto this weekend with Lynn Bruce and Joyce Michie leading the way with 34 and 31 points respectively.  Lynn has been the form player so far this year.  Not surprisingly, she also leads  the overall League table after six weeks.  It was a very cold weekend so it was pleasing to pick up ten cards in the Clubhouse this morning.  Please note though that the box contained nine £1 coins and one 10p coin.   The temperature is at  least forecast to be in positive figures this coming weekend, so shake off the icicles and come out to play on Saturday or Sunday.

I reckon Benny Hartop Senior would be delighted if the course just consisted of the 15th hole played many times.  He didn't quite match last week's Stableford score of six this week but he scored four giving him an avergae of five at the 15th over the past two weeks.

Both Lynn and Joyce see their handicaps reduce,by three and two respectively.  Gordon Ferguson's handicap stays the same but all others rise by one or two.

Lynn Bruce extends her lead at the top of the League Table from 1 point to 9 points as we continue to look at aggregate of the best three scores in the first six weeks.  Lynn is on 95, averaging 31.7 per counting round against a par of 26..  Joyce Michie rises to second place on 86 with Gordon Ferguson also moving up, to third on 84..  The table then gets very bunched up.

Six  rounds have now been played and we have some people with six scores to date and some with anything from one to five scores.  To give a clearer picture of relative positions, the League table below is sorted on the aggregate of the best three scores to date.  For weekend seven we will  sort the League on the aggregate of the best four scores.  Every two weeks we will increase the number of best scores being aggregated by one until we get to eight scores which will then be sort criteria for the rest of the League.

With 10 entries this week (one nil return) , the funds are split - £2.50 Club, £2.50 Winter League kitty, Lynn Ferguson £3 and Joyce Michie £2.  Prizes for this week and last weekk will be ditributed at the Council Meeting this week.

This is a competition designed for all abilities - come along a play a few holes of golf every weekend and keep your skills throughout the winter.

Aggregate of best three scores determine League positions

The figure in brackets after a golfer’s name indicates the handicap used to generate the Stableford score in the most recent week.

Results are sorted by Total, (highest to lowest), then by number of scores counting to the total (Lowest to highest), then by number of weekends played (lowest to highest) and finally by Christian Name if still a tie.

The Mixed Winter League runs on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am using the Winter Tees.  Just turn up and play with another member.  The Competitions began on the weekend of 4th / 5th November 2017 and will run until the weekend of 24th / 25th March 2018

On weekend 1, League handicaps equal National Handicaps.   For individual Stableford scores in excess of 26 any week, the player’s  League handicap is cut by 1 for every 2 points or part thereof over 26, i.e. 27 / 28 incurs a cut of 1, 29 /30 incurs a cut of 2 etc.  Also this year, for every 2 points or part thereof below 26, the player’s League handicap is raised by 1, i.e.  23/24 will generate an increase of 1, 21/22 will generate an increase of 2 etc. Scores of 25 or 26 will leave a player’s handicap unchanged.   For Ladies the score used to determine handicap changes is the score before the bonus of 3 is added.    The maximum permitted handicap will be 54

League handicaps are completely independent of National Handicaps which remain unchanged throughout.  The aim is to spread the prize money around and provide close competition throughout the Series.

Handicap adjustments so far in the Summer Series 2017, in alphabetical order of surnames are:

Minto Golf Club - Mixed Winter League 2017/2018

This is a competition open to all Gents and Ladies with an active Club handicap of any value and Juniors with handicaps 28 or less.  National handicaps on 1st November will apply initially but will change, for Winter League purposes only, during the competition.

The competition will be played on Saturdays and Sundays from November 4th/5th to March 24th/25th. This gives a possible 21 weekends on which the League can be played.  Golfers can choose to play on either Saturday or Sunday.

The format will be a 13 hole Stableford played over holes 1 and 7 to 18 using the Gents Stroke Index Gents and Juniors will play off the Yellow tees and Ladies will play off the Red teesLadies scores will be enhanced by 3 points to compensate for the 14th being a par 5 on the Ladies Index, the fact that the Gents tee on the 13th is advanced by 70 yards in Winter and experience with scoring in 2016/2017

To allow the greens to thaw out, competition play should not start before 10amThe status of the Blue Disc on the first tee at 10am will determine what greens are used for play on any specific Saturday or Sunday.  If winter greens are used, the two putt rule will apply (i.e. if the first putt misses, the second putt will be given).  Competitors playing 13 holes only may start any time after 10am.  To allow an even flow of finishers through the Clubhouse and avoid a rush of catering requests at the same time, players are encouraged to start from the first tee.  However, it is recognised that this might not always be possible and players can start from any tee subject to standard rules of golfing etiquette on cutting in.

If golfers wish to play 18 holes, e.g. by starting before 10am they can do so but cards will only be scored in the competition for holes 1 and 7 to 18 (and hole 1 should be played after 10am)

To try and make the competition closer than last year, we will be reducing league handicaps for every 2 points or part thereof greater than 26 in any one week.  Similarly, handicaps will be increased by 1 for every 2 points or part thereof below 26.  For example, a score of 31 will attract a reduction of 3, while a score of 23 will yield an increase of 2.  A score of 26 will not generate any handicap change.

There will be a weekly entry fee of £1 which should be placed in an honesty box that will be positioned on the Lounge Bar printer.  Signed cards should be placed in a box in the same place   Cards will be checked for Stableford accuracy and adjusted if necessary.  As far as possible, results will be posted on the website on Monday evening together with the updated League table.  Paper copies of the weekly results will be posted on noticeboards sometime before the next week’s competition is played.

Positions in the League will be determined by the aggregate of the best eight Stableford scores across the 21 weeks.  Prize money will be awarded each week to the first two places, after a contribution to Club Funds and a contribution to the overall League kitty.   Depending on the size of the final kitty, further prizes will be distributed to at least the first three players overall, possibly up to five.

This is a social and fun competition.  National handicaps will not be changed as a result of scores recorded in any week.  Scores will not be recorded in the official Handicap systems.

In the event of continued bad weather rendering part or all of the course unplayable or especially slippery, the Competition Committee reserve the right to adjust the rules at any time.  For instance, play may be restricted to 10 holes on occasion and the required number of rounds contributing to the final score may be adjusted downwards.
