December Texas Scramble - Albert's Texas swansong!

01 mtx 121217Albert Thompson reports: The Senior Mixed Texas Scramble which is always played on the last Tuesday of the months October to March inclusive, apart from December when it is usually played earlier due to Christmas, was played on Tuesday 12th Dec. Even though it was one of the coldest days of the year, the course being covered with a light layer of snow, and the fairways and greens rock hard, two teams of three played the ten holes with very creditable scores, which in some circumstances, would be quite acceptable on a Summer's day.

All credit must go to Mary Glendinning, the only lady to represent the Ladies section. Mary played some really good golf, and tried to inspire her two partners to play better but it appears that they let her down, so that instead of winning, her team came a close second!

After prize giving, when Albert had thanked everyone for taking part, he announced that although he had really enjoyed running the Seniors Mixed Texas Scramble for several years, his intention is to stand aside and pass the reins over to Joyce Michie who had previously agreed to carry on the tradition. He also thanked Duncan Shiell for his help in recent years and Duncan agreed to remain involved with Joyce at the helm. Always lots of fun in which to take part, these scrambles provide a great opportunity for players of all abilities to participate and enjoy each other's company, and help win a team prize.

Winning Team: Tam Glendinning, Colin Gibson and Duncan Shiell, gross 39, handicap 6.5 = 32.5

Second place team:  Mary Glendinning, David Squirrell and Albert Thompson, gross 40, handicap 6.5 = 33.5

The next Scramble will be on Tuesday 30th January. Everyone is welcome - meet at 09:15 for a prompt 10:00 tee off.  It takes a while to balance handicaps between the teams hence the early time for meeting.

Thank you to Monica who  took a couple of pictures of the teams:

November Texas Scramble

The November Mixed Winter 10 hole Texas Scramble was played in cold conditions but still attracted thirteen hardy golfers.  Although the top field was open, golfers decided to play holes 1, 7 to 10 and 14 to 18 to get in the ten holes. The thirteen players went out as three three-balls and one four-ball.  Handicaps were adjusted to ensure equality between the three- and four-balls.T he results showed a win for one of the three-balls comprising Angela Trueman, John Lunn and Tam Glendiinnning

Second place went to the four ball of Mary Glendinning, Colin Gibson, Steve Mather and Dale Ploughman

Agnes Mather, Pat Jubb and Eddie Berridge took third place

A picture of two of the winning team can be seen below:  Thanks to Joyce Michie for the photograph.

Given the weather conditions and the heavy ground, choosing to play 1, 7-10 and 14-18 made a lot of sense.  There is though a downside to playing non-consecutive holes in that there may be other players on the course.  When moving to a non-consecutive teeing ground please check there is no one playing the hole preceding your new tee.  If there is, then please let them through.

The next Texas Scramble will be in mid December, on Tuesday 12th December.  Everyone welcome!

October Texas Scramble

Albert Thompson reports on the first Mixed Winter 10 Hole Texas Scramble that was played on Tuesday 31st October.  Seventeen players took part in the first of this series of events that take place on the last Tuesday of months October to March, except for December, when this year, due to Xmas, it will be held on Tuesday 12th December. Played over ten holes it is always a fun event and Tuesday was no exception.

To add to the fun, a crow became involved on the 9th fairway when it swooped down, picked up Joyce Michie's ball and flew towards the green. There were expectations that the ball might be dropped on the green but unfortunately the crow turned in mid-flight and flew into a very tall oak tree where the ball remained! Scoring was good by all five teams but the winning team with a net score of 33.0 was Kenny Lyle, Mary Glendinning and John Lunn. Second with a score of 33.1 was the team (pictured) of Pat Jubb, Merrick Innes, John Biggar and Janet Kyle.  In third place was the team of Eddie Berridge, Margaret AllanCatrina Hamilton and Colin Gibson.

It's good to see some new names amongst the players with a special welcome to Ladies who are taking part in the 2017 Get into Golf initiative.  All Club members are welcome to play in these monthly Texas Scrambles.  The next event is on Tuesday 28th November.  Gather in the Clubhouse at 9:15 to allow the selection of teams before a prompt tee-off at 10:00am.  Albert will put up entry sheets in the Changing Rooms in mid November.  Whilst it's helpful to know in advance who is playing, we are also very happy if you just turn up on the day.

Albert thanked everyone for taking part, with special thanks to Joyce Michie and Ken Auckland for helping to organise the teams
