Seniors Summer League - Alister Legge wins the League

summer league

Winter Tees will be introduced next Monday (23rd October) so the Seniors Summer League came to an end this week with the 25th round being played on Monday 16th November.  There were only two people who could win the League and one of them was abroad, so Alister Legge didn't have to fight off a late challenge to his top position. Congratulations to Alister who tops the League on 77.0 points with John Lunn taking second place on 73.5.  The event on Monday tightened up places from 2nd to 5th such that only 3 points covered these places.  Tam Glendinning took third place on 72.5, Ray Johnson was fourth on 71.5 while Duncan Shiell came in fifth on 70.5.

The winner on the day on Monday was Pat Jubb whose 33 just pipped Alec Lauder's on countback.  Pat's handicap would be 7 if there were another week in the Summer League.  The weather on Monday was fairly awful such that a few Seniors opted out after 10 or 13 holes.  That explains some of the low scores in the week's results below.

As overall winner of the 2017 Summer League, Alister Legge's national handicap will be cut by 1.

It has been another entertaining year for the Seniors Summer League.  Forty seven Seniors played one or more of the twenty five rounds.  Some played only in the Medals where the stroke play scores are converted to League Stableford points so they might not have been aware that they were playing in the League.

There are a few more statistics.  Three Seniors played twenty or more rounds - Tam Glendinning 22, Alister Legge 21 and Ray Johnson 20.  The highest single Stableford score was the 45 returned by Colin Gibson on 26th June. During the season six Seniors had their League handicaps cut by 4 or more - Jock Henderson came down 4, Pat Jubb, John Lunn and Charlie Oliver came down 5 while Alister Legge and Colin Gibson were cut by 6 (Colin's in one go following his 45)

John Lunn had the greatest number of firsts or ties for first with 4.  Alister Legge, Ray Johnson, Jock Henderson and Charlie Oliver all had two wins or ties.

That's it for Summer - Winter starts next week.  All handicaps revert to National but I'm sure playing off the winter tees will bring out the handicapper's axe very quickly.  It has been specially sharpened for the occasion.

All Seniors (Minto golfers aged 55 or over) are welcome to play in the leagues.  Just come along to the Clubhouse by 9:45 on Monday mornings so that we can start promptly at 10:00am.  There is always a draw for partners so over time you will get to play with many other Seniors.  You don't have to be competitive to play.  There are some competitive members but many others are happy to play for the exercise and the company.  Most weeks it will cost you a £1.  If you play in a 4-ball as a pairs match you may pay zero if you win; alternatively you may pay £2 if you lose.  If you win, you will do very well - the more the players, the higher the winnings for first and second.

The final standings for 2017 are shown below.  Thanks to everyone who played and especially to Senior Convener Tam Glendinning for keeping everyone in order throughout the season.  You will be aware that Tam is standing down now, so please offe ryour help to organise the Seniors in 2018.

Results for 16th October alone are shown after the list of handicap changes.

Results are sorted by Total, (highest to lowest), then by number of scores counting to the total (Lowest to highest), then by Mondays played (lowest to highest) and finally by Christian Name if still a tie.

Seniors Leagues run on Monday mornings, 10am, the Summer League when the Yellow tees are in place and the Winter League when the Winter Tees are being used..  For 2017 this meant 10th April to16th October   The Winter League will run from 23rd October to sometime around the end of March 2018.   When Mondays in Summer coincide with a Seniors Medal, 18 hole stroke play scores will be converted to Stableford and League scores using current League handicaps.  There will be a couple of weeks when the league coincides with a Home team match at Minto.  In those weeks the league can still be played as long as seven Seniors are available for play.  If less than seven, Seniors not in the match should still play.  When a Home Match day coincides with a League day, we would ask that League players start at 09;30 rather than 10:00.

On week 1 of either the Summer or the Winter League, handicaps equal National Handicaps.   For individual Stableford scores in excess of 36 any week [or 2*n when n holes are played], the player’s  League handicap is cut by 1 for every 2 points or part thereof over 36, i.e. 37 / 38 incurs a cut of 1, 39 /40 incurs a cut of 2 etc.  In addition the week’s winner has his handicap cut by a further 1. In previous years, League handicaps have stayed the same or gone down only..  There has been no provision for handicaps to rise. Perhaps there should be, to even up any handicap anomalies; see below

League handicaps are completely independent of National Handicaps which remain unchanged throughout.  The aim of adjusting handicaps is to spread the prize money around, ensure everyone has an equal chance of winning and provide close competition throughout the Series as well as providing a pleasant round of golf.
