Daily Mail Foursomes - an eighteenth too far!

daily mail foursomesLynn Bruce reports on how she and Carolyn Oliver just missed out on a weekend in Wales. Carolyn & Lynn welcomed Sally (17) & Heather (26) from Pumpherston (Livingston) to Minto on Friday 17th August.  The visitors settled in quickly winning the 1st, 4th and 6th with the other holes on the top 9 halved, so 3 up at the turn thanks to lovely shot making and steady putting.

The hosts finally found a gear winning the 11th, 12 and 13th where the second shot had found the bunker and Carolyn holed a long putt for 4.  All square after 13, the next 4 holes went alternately so all to play for on the 18th.  With both pairs on the green in 4, it came down to putts which Sally sealed for victory and a place in the last 16 in Wales in October.

So the run comes to an end however it has been a great experience, we have enjoyed the competition and meeting new people along the way.  We are amazed and chuffed to get so far, and appreciate all the support from the club.  We wish Sally & Heather all the best for the weekend at the Marriott St Pierre in South Wales.

Commiserations to Lynn and Carolyn, they have done Minto proud.  Good luck to Kaija Sanford and Karen Telfer who will fly the flag for Minto in the 2019 competition.

Round 6 match report

Lynn Bruce reports on  avery successful trip to Dumfires to play the latest round of the Daily Mail Foursomes 2018.   'Round 6 of the Daily Mail Foursomes saw Carolyn Oliver & Lynn travel to Dumfries & County Golf Club on 10th August.  Sheila (16) and Sheenagh (27) were our hosts/opponents, giving us two strokes.  The Minto visitors got off to a positive start taking the first hole, moved on to the second where Carolyn had a superb chip from a gully onto the green making for a straight forward putt, 3 foot from the pin.  Four holes in and Minto were 4up,.

The 5th and 6th were halved before Minto used their first stroke to secure the 7th; the 8th was halved and Dumfries won the par 3 9th with a good putt from Sheenagh.  So 4up at the turn then the 10th was halved, before all wheels came off at the 11th with the hosts in the trees and Minto in a bunker, several putts later and Minto came away with the hole, going 5 up.  Lynn's wayward drive off the 12th put Carolyn in the trees but she managed a good recovery over the fairway and Minto came away with another hole.  Dormy 6.  The 13th saw steady drives and shots to the green which was now puddled following several heavy showers from the 6th hole onwards.  It came down to the putts with Minto making use of their 2nd extra stroke to secure a win, 7&5.

Dumfries & County is a parkland course which we found in good condition with a few patches still recovering from the recent hot weather.  The greens in particular were very quick - a challenge to master the pace.

The draw for Round 7 (last 32) will be made on Monday 13th; Canmore (Dumfermline), Inverness, Kirriemuir, Pumpherston (Livingstone) and Stranraer are already through, we await the next instalment....'

Good luck to Lyn  and Carolyn in Round 7

Round 5

Duddingston Ladies Dorothy & Heather were the visitors to Minto on 11 July for the 5th round of the Daily Mail Foursome to play Minto's Lynn Bruce and Carolyn Oliver  After a rather faltering start by both teams, Carolyn & Lynn made use of the extra shots plus home advantage to make the turn 5 up.

Heather played exquisite chips to the green on several occasions and the visitors clawed one back on the 12th, the 13th was halved before Minto ran out victors on the 14th, 5 & 4.
