Gents Championships qualifying - Seedings and Draws!

championship logoQualifying for the Gents Championships was completed yesterday, Saturday 2nd June, when the June Medal was  was played. Full results of that event can be found elsewhere on the website.  This story looks at the final positions of Gents submitting two qualifying scratch scores in the three Championship Divisions after the three events.  We have accepted thirty-six entries for the knockout stages.  Unfortunately two of those entrants did not submit two scores, so there are thirty-four players in the Draws - twelve in the Open and eleven in each of Divisions 2 and 3.

The Competitions Committee want to encourage play in the Championships but felt that they couldn't relax the rule on the need for two qualifying scores.

The aggregate of the best two scratch scores determines seeding in all three classes and the Draws are based upon those seeding rankings.

The tables below show the qualifying scores for each of the three Championship Divisions.

Ties have been resolved following the rules shown at the bottom of this article

Minto Captain Gary McDonagh will host a four-ball comprising himself and the three Championship winners at Royal Dunbar later this year.

The Draws are now available online and can be accessed here or through the Matchplay Progress button in the middle of the second row of Golf buttons on any page of the website.

With the number of qualifiers we have, the timetable for Championship Week is as follows:

Monday 25th June - from 5:30 pm -  Division 2 First Round - three ties

Tuesday 26th June - from 5:30 pm - Open and Division 3 First rounds - seven ties

Thursday 28th June - from 5:30 pm - Semi Finals all Divisions - six ties

Championship Rules 2018

This year we have reverted to three Championship Divisions as follows:...

  1. Open
  2. Handicaps 10 to 15
  3. Handicaps 16 to 28

The handicap ruling when you first play a qualifier determines your Division unless you specifically choose to enter the Open Division.  There is a single entry fee of £2 for the Championship which must be paid before playing your first qualifier.

Qualification is based on the best aggregate two gross scores from your play in the qualifiers.  The number of players who qualify for knockout week 25th – 30th June will be determined by the number entries in each Division.

If you wish to play in the Open Division with a handicap greater that 9 please add your name to the sheet in the Changing Room.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The complete rules for the Club Championships (edited to show just the Gents rules), are as follows:

  1. All play in the Club championships shall be scored off scratch.
  2. Gents Club Championships shall be held in three classes:
  • Club Championship (Open)                             Open to all handicaps
  • Club Championship (Second Class)                 Handicaps 10 to 15
  • Class 3 Roofers Trophy (Third Class)               Handicaps 16 to 28

  1. Players with handicaps greater than 28 (Gents) are not eligible to play in Club Championships
  2. Entry is by qualification by stroke play in selected Fox & Hounds Medals (see further details at 9 below) followed by subsequent rounds of Matchplay. For Gents, these matches will be played during the last full week of June / first week of July.
  3. An entry fee shall be paid to enter any of the Club championship classes and shall be in addition to any fee due for entry to the qualifying competitions. Only one Championship entry fee is required. The fee shall be decided by the Competition and Handicap Committee or the Ladies Committee each year.
  4. An entry to any of the Championship classes must be recorded and paid prior to the first qualifying competition if the score of that competition is to be counted towards the qualifying score.
  5. Juniors will only be allowed the chance to play in the Club Championship (Open) with a handicap of 18 or under (Gents)
  6. Qualifying:
  7. The Competition and Handicap Committee shall nominate three competitions as qualifying competitions for the Gents Championships and entrants to each Championship class must obtain a qualifying score by taking the aggregate of their two best gross scores from these competitions. The qualifying competitions will usually by Fox & Hounds Nos 4 to 6 but can be others if circumstances dictate.
  8. The most appropriate number of golfers with best aggregate scores in each class will qualify for the Matchplay rounds.
  9. The Competitions Convenor can adjust the number of golfers who qualify to the match play stages in any class according to the number of entrants.
  10. Ties in the Gents qualifying scores shall be decided by:-
  • The better score in the third qualifying round provided that all players concerned have played three rounds. If not, then
  • The better score in the last of the two rounds counted in the qualifying score, regardless of the fact that they may be different dates, followed by the last 9 holes, last 6 holes, last 3 holes, last hole, as is required to break the tie, failing which the first round of the qualifying score shall be used on a similar basis.

  1. The handicap played off in the first qualifying competition shall determine which class shall be played in, in the Match play stages, for Gents Second and Third Division
  2. Gents Matchplay rounds:
  3. Matchplay rounds shall take place during the last full week of June / first week of July unless otherwise decided by the Competition Convenor. Rounds leading up to the finals should be played between Monday and Thursday inclusive.
  4. The draw of qualifiers for match play shall be seeded for all players according to their qualifying position. Substitutes will be placed in the position of the qualifier who withdraws after, but not before the draw is made. There will be no redraw.
  5. All ties shall be played to a conclusion unless conceded. In the event of ties being level after 18 holes of play, except in the final, play shall continue on the 1st, 7th,8t h,9th and 10th holes in rotation until a decision is reached. In the event of a tie in the final play will continue on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc until a decision is reached.
  6. All ties leading up to finals in all Classes, and the finals of Second and Third Class will be played over 18 holes. The Club Championship (Open) final shall be played over 36 holes.
  7. The days for Match Play rounds shall be decided by the Competition Convenor each year and shown on the website and in the Club Diary. Any change to the days shall be at the discretion of the Competitions Convenor
  8. The Friday of the Match Play week will be reserved as a contingency day in case of bad weather delaying the original programme.
  9. All ties must be played on the stipulated day and at, or before, the appointed time unless otherwise approved by the Competition Convenor or his appointed representatives.
