Gents Seniors Matches - Finish with a win at Goswick

golf match icon

Minto Seniors rounded off their busy match season with an excellent away win at Goswick.  Goswick is a venue that everyone enjoys playing an the team captain had an array of Seniors to choose from for this match.  At least nineteen Seniors expressed an interest in playing  It's not easy to win away from home, so congratulations to the team. The team has had a good year with more wins than the total of losses and draws.

There is some suggestion that Minto may have won 4 - 2 but a win's a win and we'll take that!  The published result is shown below

The Seniors team owe a huge vote of thanks to Jim Adams for all his work arranging a packed programme.  Jim has nearly finalised a similar programme for 2019, with the singleton matches being played at the oppositie course to this year.

After all fifteen matches this year, the Minto Seniors Team Record is Played: 15, Won 8, Lost: 4, Drawn: 3,  Rubbers for: 49.5, Rubbers against: 39.5  (The Bellingham match only had 5 rubbers)

Thanks also to all the Seniors who have played in at least one match or a four Club Texas Scrambles with Duns, Bellingham and Kelso this year.  We look forweard to another successful year.

Results of previous matches this year can be seen further below.

Match v Peebles - Home 18th September

Sorry for the delay in updating the Seniors team statistics after the match versus Peebles match on 18th September.    The match resulted in a 3-3 draw and enabled Minto to enter the final match against Goswick knowing that whatever the score there, the rubbers won inj 2018 will exceed the rubbers lost.  Thanks to Jim Adams for arranging such a packed programme this year.

The team for the Goswick will be posted soon.

After fourteen matches this year, the Minto Seniors Team Record is Played: 14, Won 7, Lost: 4, Drawn: 3,  Rubbers for: 46, Rubbers against: 37  (Bellingham match only had 5 ties)

Results of previous matches this year can be seen below.

For this season, Jim Adams has arranged an expanded programme fifteen matches plus a couple of Texas Scrambles for Gents Seniors.  The final match is the Away match versus Goswick on Tuesday 6th November.  Albert Thompson will be captaining the team.

All Senior members of Minto are eligible to play in these matches and we like to give us many Seniors as possible the opportunity to play in a few matches.

To this end, Jim has pinned up an list of Senior Members who have played in matches in the past together with the dates of all the matches so that you can indicate your availability.  A Senior Gent is anyone over aged 55 or over.  If your name is not on the list and you would like to play just contact Jim or e-mail the webmaster (webmaster@mintogolf.co.uk) and we'll get you added.

Jim is already hard at work on confirming dates and for the 2019 series.  We hope to play the same full programme as we did in 2018 on similar dates (i.e the date has changed by 1)..  The only changes envisaged at the moment are a change to the order in which we play home and away against Kelso.  As is usual, the singleton matches against West Linton, the Hirsel and Bellingham will change venue in 2019 compared to 2018.

Match v Rothbury - Home 10th September

Minto got back to winning ways in a very close contest against Rothbury at Minto on Tuesday by coming home 3.5 to 2.5 .  Rothbury won an equally close match on their course back in May so honours are even for this year.  Once again, the sun shone for most of the round and the match was played in a very good spirit.  A few words from each Captain after the meal expressed thanks to the greens, lounge bar and catering staff for making it an excellent day. WE look forward to renewing battle with Rothbury early next year.

Match v The Hirsel - Away 5th September

Away matches are always more difficult to win than home matches, and the match against The Hirsel on Wednesday proved no exception.  The hosts were better on the day and handed out a 5-1 defeat to Minto.  Two halved matches and two others going to the 18th green though showed it could have gone either way.  It's always good to play at The Hirsel and the weather, as usual this year, was kind.  The match is at Minto next year, so there is an opportunity to redress the balance then.

Match v Kelso  Home 30th August

Another match, another day of glorious weather.  The sun shone, the wind started calm, although it rose a bit during the day.  The golf was played in a very friendly spirit as Minto welcomed Kelso for the return of the match played at Kelso three weeks ago.  The overall result was again a win for Minto, but by a slightly narrower margin.  The score today was Minto 4.5, Kelso 1.5 Four matches went to the seventeenth or eighteenth greens before being resolved, or in case not resolved, so the result could have gone either way.

It wasn't just the golf that made headlines today.  There was a trolley race across the fifteenth and sixteenth fairways, with a win for the trolley as it launched itself into the deepest part of the ditch alongside the sixteenth hole.  It wasn't a good day for Kelso trolleys today as another one gave up the ghost near the fifth tee.

It was good to see almost no evidence of the horses who visited the middle field last weekend.  Thanks to Paul, Daniel and JP for sorting out the effects of the hooves.

Everyone expressed thanks to Steven and Michael and Ian for looking after us at lunch and at the bar.

Match v Duns Home 23rd August

Minto always face a tough match when the play Duns, even if the match is played at Minto.  Honours were even this time, with Duns winning rubbers 1, 3 and 5 but Minto ifghting back in rubbers 2, 4 and 6.  There were some close ties and some no so close in both directions.  The course and the greens are faring well with the return of the rain.  We could have done without the rain though for the first half hour of the Duns match on Thursday 23rd August.  Fortunately the squally heavy showers moved away.

After an enjoyable round of golf everyone adjourned to the Clubhouse for drinks and a meal.  Thanks to Minto staff and Ann Witherington for looking after us all.

The Minto Seniors team continues to have a good season with wins outweighing losses.  There have now been three drawn matches.

Match v The Woll Away 16th August

Commiserations to the Minto Seniors Team who were just beaten 4-2 in an Away match at The Woll on Thursday 16th August.  It's always difficult to win away from home.  The Woll match was the second in a four week run of Senior team outings.  Ron Elliot reports that a good day was had by all on a Woll course that was in lovely condition, followed by an excellent meal.

The next match is at home against Duns next Thursday 23rd August.  Jim Adams has been in touch will all the Seniors selected for the team.  Please let Jim or Albert Thompson know if you are unable to play.

Match v Kelso Away - 9th August

Minto Seniors started a very busy of period of matches today (Thursday 9th August) with a resounding 5-1 win over Kelso at their racecourse site.  While the weather may have been wet further south, there was no problem at Kelso where the sun shone all day.  There was though quite a challenging wind that came into play at times.  Team Captain Pim McDonnell and Keer Scott led the way with a good 3&1 over the Kelso top pair.

The Kelso course was in excellent condition and we were well fed and waterd after the golf.  Thanks to Kelso for organising an enjoyable event.

Minto continued to put points on in the most of the following ties.  As usual, the match was played in a very friendly spirit with only a couple of tongue-in-cheek suggestions that the Minto handicap secretary should adjust some of his members playing handicaps!.

Match v West Linton -Away  19th July

Minto Seniors travelled to West Linton today and came away with a resounding win.  It's usually very difficult to win away from home given local knowledge amongst the opposition.  However, there were some excellent individual performances from Minto players today.  Iain Oliver scored a gross 68 (net 63) and Ron Elliot also had a net 63.  Together with excellent performances all round from Minto, Iain and Ron contributed to a 5-1 win for Minto.  Jim Adams reports that West Linton too was home to sunburnt fairways with greens running true.

The food and company was excellent, so a good day was had by all.

Match v Bellingham - Home 11th July

This was the first Seniors Match between Minto and Bellingham.  Thanks to Jim Adams for setting up the fixture.  Both teams were only able to field ten players, but that didn't distract from the day.  The dry weather continued and the ball ran a long way on the fairways.  Most of the rubbers were closely fought affairs with four going to the 17th or 18th green.  In the end, Minto prevailed with a 3.5 to 1.5 win.

The match against Bellingham will be played once a year, so Minto will travel to Bellingham for the return next year.  However, we look forward to going to Bellingham in late September (27th) to play in the second Borders 4-Club Texas Scramble of the season along with friends from Kelso and Duns.

The result strengthens Minto Seniors perfromance in matches this season.  See results and summary to date further below.

Iain Oliver and Angus Scott got Minto off to a good start with a 2&1 victory in the top game.  Albert Thompson & Eric English then came in with a half before Minto sealed the match with victories in Rubbers 3 and 4.

Thanks to Michael and Lily inthe  Kitchen / Servery and Steven behind the bar to ensure that the Clubhouse service went well.

Match v The Woll - Home 14th June

Minto Seniors took full advantage of home advantage to record a 4-2 win over The Woll on Thursday 14th June.  Good conditions meant that the course was playing well and the greens ran true.  The match was the first for our new Chef, Michael, but he and and Lynsay behind the bar and Anne Witherington on waitress duties all rose to the challenge.

The result puts Minto Seniors in positive territory in terms of ties won and lost this season.

After five matches this year, the Minto Seniors Team Record is Played: 5, Won 2, Lost: 2, Drawn: 1, Rubbers for: 15.5, Rubbers against: 14.5

Results of previous matches this year can be seen below.

For this season, Jim Adams has arranged an expanded programme fifteen matches plus a couple of Texas Scrambles for Gents Seniors.  T..  The next interclub match is against Bellingham at Minto on Wednesday 11th July

The season extends right through to Tuesday 6th November when we travel to Goswick.

For a full list of fixtures click here

These matches are always good fun and are played in a friendly competitive spirit.  After the golf there is usually a 2 course meal.  A small charge is made - £10 in recent years - but that fee may have to rise slightly in 2018.  Even if it rises, it's still a bargain price especially when you play on an away course and get fed.

The fixture list takes in Bellingham this year as well as the more traditional hunting grounds of Rothbury, Peebles, Kelso, Duns, The Woll, The Hirsel, Goswick and West Linton

The notice is pinned up in the Gents Changing Room on the inside wall, not on the Seniors Notice Board.

Match v Duns - Away - 7th June

Well, perhaps the headline is a bit misleading, but compared to last year's 6-0 thrashing in the monsoons of Duns, Minto got much closer this time, just losing by 4-2 with four ties ties going to the 17th or 18th greens.  The weather couldn't have been more different this year compared to last with plenty of sunshine and very little wind.  Duns is a longer course than Minto, so Minto were always going to be the underdogs.

The best performance came rorm Iain Oliver and Gordon Wilks who came home 2&1 winners.  Two other ties were halved to generate Minto's 2 points.

There was a little bit of alarm before the match when Alister Legge managed to lock himself inside his car for a few minutes before being rescued.  Everybody was looking for Alister to tell him his car alarm was going, but nobody thought to look inside the car when they first heard the alarm.

Minto v Peebles (Away) - 29th May

Peebles is a Club with plenty of resources so it was good to go there and hold the Peebles Seniors on their home turf.  As ever, the views and the hospitality were excellent.  The match ended in 3-3 tie with many rubbers which could have gone either way. At one point as the individual ties came in, Minto has a lead but a draw is a very good result.  Alister Legge captained the Minto team with strong support from Jim Adams.

Match v Goswick - Home, 1st May

After a narrow loss at Rothbury two weeks ago, Minto Seniors got into their stride with a 4-2 win over Goswick at Minto on Tuesday 1st May.  Thanks to Jim Adams and Albert Thompson for their roles as team manager and captain respectively. It was a match where Minto players represented both teams. Goswick had previously informed us that due to call-offs they could only bring ten Seniors, but the long-standing friendly relationship between the two clubs meant that Minto could help balance the teams. Albert Thompson and Pim McDonnell donned Goswick colours  for the day.  Goswick's Captain David Wilson, was very appreciative of Albert's offer.

Unfortunately, after having provided two men to play for Goswick, one of the Minto team then had to withdraw with damaged elbow, leaving Minto a man short. Although Albert phoned a number of Seniors, none of them were able to attend, but luckily he had noticed a lone golfer teeing off earlier so he made his way to the sixth hole where David Whigham was playing  David readily agreed make his debut into the Seniors matches and represen tMinto.

As a token of appreciation to Minto Seniors for providing players for his team, Captain Dave Wilson has invited us to bring sixteen players when we play the return match at Goswick in November.

Match v Rothbury - Away, 16th April

The Seniors 2018 series of matches got underway yesterday (Monday 16th April) when Minto ventured across the border to Rothbury.  The Rothbury match is usually the curtain raiser for the season..The sun shone for most of the time and people were seen without waterproofs and windcheaters as the match came to an exciting conclusion.

In the end, the Home team won by the odd half point, 3.5 to 2.5.  After four rubbers, Minto were just ahead, but couldn't hold out. The full results can be found further below.

As ever, the ties were played in a very friendly spirit.  Rothbury were excellent hosts providing a bacon roll & coffee before the match with a main course for lunch.  WE will host Rothbury at Minto in September.  Ron Elliot was described by Minto's team Captain John Law as the star performer of the day when John said that Ron holed a 300 foot putt to help Minto to halve the tie.  We suspect that there was a modicum of exaggeration there, but ti was clearly a long putt.
